Something More: Finding the Joy and Purpose of Life by Theron St. John

The Synopsis:

The teenage and college years are some of the most important years of your life. You grow up and become a young adult. You graduate and think about what you want to do with your life, and you begin to ask the big questions of life. Among them is the question, “What is the purpose of life?” We believe if we can find out the purpose of life, then we will live a joy-filled life. The only problem is many of us do not know what the purpose of life is. We all are on this search and seek to find it in the things we do, what we have, and who we belong to or know. Yet, none of them prove to provide lasting joy or have ultimate purpose. So, what is the answer? In ‘Something More’, Theron St. John looks at the common pursuit for purpose and joy, addressing the problems young adults face and offering the solution where young adults can find the ultimate purpose for their lives and the lasting joy that comes with it.

I received this book from the author for the purpose of this review. All comments and opinions are entirely my own.

Review:

“Weak desire do not lead to lasting pleasure. We need something more. We were made for something more. We were made for someone more.” -Theron St John, Something More

In Something More, the author invites his readers on a journey of self-evaluation and, with stories and illustrations, points them towards Jesus, the everlasting fulfillment of life.

I really enjoyed Something More and the questions and answers that it provided. The author focuses on the topics of identity, Biblical joy, and what it means to live for a purpose, rather than simply living for vain wants and desires.

He uses examples from the Bible, from relatable fictional characters, personal stories and friends, and even famous celebrities to illustrate his points throughout the book. His brief and to the point writing style makes it great for its target audience (high school & college age students), though there were some topics that I think could have been expounded on further for emphasis. The discussion questions after each chapter also make this great for a small group study.

Overall though, Something More: Finding The Joy and Purpose of Life is a great book and I recommend it especially for new Christians and youth groups! I give it 4 out of 5 stars.
