Cave of Legends by Scott Charles (Dragon League; 1)

“This book takes everything that we’re obsessed with in the YA Fantasy magic academia setting and puts into a reading level for early bookworms.”

Review by Rayleigh Gray

From the author of the hit Video Game Elementary series comes the first in a brand-new, action-packed series for young readers, featuring 25 half- and full-page illustrations.

On the dragon continent of Valfaer, arena battles are a sacred tradition. Tales of the Dragon League and its magic-wielding heroes fill the headlines.

Tiny Redvale Village has never produced a battle dragon, nor anything close. So when young Fennec Swordtail is called to Qigong City, to compete for a spot in its famous Battle School, no one expects very much.

Thrust into a world of magic and martial arts, Fennec has two weeks to prove he belongs. Even if his wings are too short. And his horns are just stubs. “He’ll never make it,” say the other dragons. But Fennec won’t quit. He’s determined to leave his mark on the Dragon League!

In this richly illustrated chapter book series, join young dragon Fennec Swordtail as he competes for a spot in the Dragon League. Ages 7 and up.

Magical academia meets dragons for ages 7 -12 in Cave of Legends!

The first book in the up-and-coming Dragon League series sends young dragons to school to learn how to become Battle Dragons. This book takes everything that we're obsessed with in the YA Fantasy magic academia setting and puts into a reading level for early bookworms. Friends, rivals, trials, and determination to keep fighting even when everyone says you can't do it. *chef's kiss*

The story is fast-paced, so it'll hold your young reader's attention. The writing is engaging and exciting, making it the perfect candidate to read aloud together or if your reader wants to tackle the book on their own. I loved the themes presented by Fennec embracing his differences early on in the story. He recognized those differences as his strengths and acted on them, despite his classmates telling him that he's inadequate and using him as a joke. There's some powerful messaging here that will encourage readers to remain true to themselves and to keep chasing their goals, even when the way forward looks impossible.

This series will definitely have a permanent place in my kids' library for my nieces and nephews.
