Dear Patience, Sincerely Lucy by Abigail Hammond

“Abigail Hammond has yet to release a book that I don’t devour in one sitting.”

Review by Rayleigh Setser

โ€œYou never know what moments are going to change the course of your life.โ€

Lucy Greene is surviving her twenties.

At twenty-three, she thought by now sheโ€™d have things figured out, or that sheโ€™d at least have some sort of plan. Instead, she still has no idea what she wants to do with her future.

She doesnโ€™t have time to plan her future anyway, not while sheโ€™s working as the personal assistant of a woman who does have plansโ€”a lot of them, leaving Lucy with almost no space for her own life, responsibilities, and relationships. It’s a job she never thought sheโ€™d end up with, a job everyone tells her sheโ€™s lucky to have. But despite the amount of people whoโ€™ve told Lucy they wish they were in her shoes, she doesnโ€™t feel lucky. She feels totally in over her head.

With no other plans or dreams to go after, Lucy puts her all into her job, allowing it to take priority in her life and ignoring the growing dread in the back of her mind that sheโ€™ll never find something she loves to do. She keeps her true feelings to herself, until she runs into someone who begins breaking down her walls.

Lucyโ€™s hectic life is balanced like a crooked Jenga tower, and something is about to give.

I received this book from the author. All comments and opinions are entirely my own and this review is voluntary.

Abigail Hammond has yet to release a book that I don't devour in one sitting. Her books are so binge-able and I always feel immensely happy and satisfied with her endings. Dear Patience, Sincerely Lucy was no different!

Lucy's life could easily have represented mine at one time; the go-getter, boss babe, successful woman who survives off of coffee, stress, and a to-do list that never ends. But what's great about Lucy is that she enjoys it... until she doesn't. The illustration of burnout is so well written in this story; how even though you can be good at something and enjoy it for a time, you can only run 100 mph for something you don't love for so long. Eventually, you burnout and start looking for something else, and I loved following Lucy on that journey.

Another thing that I appreciated in this book was that the woman who Lucy works for isn't portrayed as a heartless villain who only loves her job. The woman has her passion and direction in life all sorted and while she's not exactly "loveable", I actually really liked her and appreciated her character. Some women enjoy the fast-paced life and some don't, and I loved that the woman and Lucy respected each other, even in the face of opposing life goals.

Overall, I can't recommend this book enough to the women who feel like they're stuck in a routine they never signed up for. This book will give you that spark to pick up your old hobby and find yourself again.
